Celebrating 20 years of the Rhein Center
In 1999, family and friends came together to honor the memory of Kirk Rhein by funding the startup of a large open studio arts center in the Epworth Lodge building, located on the corner of Walnut Avenue and Sixth Street. Twenty years later, the C. Kirk Rhein, Jr. Center for the Living Arts welcomes more than 10,000 students every summer season, offering a wide variety of classes in fine arts, practical arts and creative crafts for students of every generation. The full spectrum of arts are represented with an ever-changing, weekly lineup of classes, including 2-D arts, ceramic arts, fiber arts, glass arts, all kinds of crafts, literature, music, theatre, woodworking and so much more. The Rhein Center, as it is affectionately known, gathers more than 140 instructors each season to share their time and expertise with Lakesiders in a community that fosters friendships, new creative passions and continued self-exploration. At 7 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 8, Lakeside will honor the 20th Anniversary of the Rhein Center and the 100th Anniversary of Epworth Lodge in a ceremony at the Rhein Center. Join us for a celebration of stories, history and refreshments. Continue to read the Lakesider, visit the Front Porch blog (blog.lakesideohio.com) and check out Lakeside’s Facebook page throughout the summer to find featured highlights of the past 20 years and more information on our anniversary celebrations.
Stay up-to-date on the Rhein Center’s registration processes
We’re excited to share some changes happening this summer as the Rhein Center enters its 20th season of offering art classes to Lakesiders. Because the Rhein Center will no longer be holding an Open House on Sunday afternoons, we want to keep you informed of the details surrounding the two most important changes: 1.) Where to find class listings and 2.) How to register for classes each week. Class listings are available in a number of places. Visit the Lakeside website to browse classes and register online (www.lakesideohio.com/classes). You can also view class listings on the new Lakeside App (Do the Mambo), which is available for free download on iOS or Android. A printed list of classes will also be available each week at the Rhein Center, Artist-N-Cahoots, the Tuesday and Friday Farmers’ Markets and Saturday (sometimes Sunday) Art in the Park. Please note that classes are no longer listed in the Lakesider newspaper. Registration will begin as usual at 8 a.m. Thursday for the following week’s classes. Register online (www.lakesideohio.com/classes) or stop by the Rhein Center anytime during open hours (8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday). We’ll also have extra staff available to assist with registration from 8-10 a.m. Mondays. Saturday classes are available for online or in-person registration. For all classes, once the class is full, you may add your name to a waiting list. You’ll be called if a space becomes available. Please stop by anytime to view class project samples. These will be changed on Friday afternoon for the following week’s classes. Remember to choose classes carefully, as the Rhein Center is unable to issue refunds for class fees. Another Rhein Center program, Art in the Park, will move to Saturdays from 2-3:30 p.m. near Pavilion Circle to coincide with the Saturday Afternoon Concerts at the Pavilion West Deck. Thank you, and we hope you’ll join us in celebrating 20 years of arts education at Lakeside through the C. Kirk Rhein, Jr. Center for the Living Arts!
